"Blue Invasion" abstract textured triptych © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This is a three panel triptych.  Each canvas measures 12 x 12 inches.  It can be displayed in multiple ways.  I textured the canvases heavily with stucco patch, which has a thick, gritty texture.

"FOREVER BLUE" mixed media flower blue hydrangea © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Forever Blue

I'm out of my comfort zone of earth tones with this one.  I had a terrible time trying to adjust the color.  My camera is not good at picking up mauve.  Some of the pinks are a little too vibrant, but you get the idea.

I hope you can see all the texture in the detail shot.  Once again, I used painted Viva paper towels for many of the petals.  I love how it looks like I cut up canvas and added it to the painting.

"BLUE NOTES" 12052, mixed media abstract musical collage © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Blue Notes
I know I ignore the blues in my palette most of the time.  So thought I'd use them ALL:  cyan, manganese, Prussian, phthalo turquoise, and Paynes gray.
Lots of fun papers were added in layers.  For more information, please click here to go to my website.

"COLORS OF MUSIC -BLUE," 10160, daily painter abstract collage © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"COLOR OF MUSIC - BLUE"

This is the second in my series, Colors of Music.  Obviously this is the blue one.  Being an abstract collage, it has lots of different stuff in it including sheet music, metal foil, rice paper, and hand painted aluminum foil.
The turquoise area in the center is the hand painted aluminum foil.  I pressed the foil around some small glass tiles for the square impressions and pressed in the coil shapes using a brush handle and a soft surface under the foil.
This 5x7 inch painting is mounted on a larger background piece and the whole thing is covered with epoxy resin.   That epoxy really makes the metallic parts shine.

This is the first one in the series - the red one.  Both of these were demonstration pieces for my Creating with Acrylics class.

HYDRANGEA BOUQUET, 9096, impasto still life of blue hydrangeas © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This painting is a commission piece for a collector who lives in Hawaii. With all the beautiful tropical flowers around her, she still misses the deep blues of the hydrangeas she remembers from the northeast. Her request was that the painting be predominantly of the flowers, have deep cobalt blues, and heavy impasto. SOLD

Art Show - Parker, CO

For those of you in the Denver area, consider this an invitation to the reception for the BLUE show, sponsored by Innovative Artists. The 3rd Floor Gallery is at the Parker Station Building on E. Mainstreet, in Parker, CO.

Glitter Gluch 9036

This is another blue (more teal, actually) abstract. Because there are a lot metallic paints used, it was so difficult to photograph. The little squares are made with acrylic modeling compound that I spread over a grid pattern. After carefully lifting off the grid, I'm left with little cubes of acrylic medium which I let dry a couple days before painting.

On the tops of the cubes I put silver leaf. It was so glittery, I toned the shine down a bit with a glaze of Golden Primary Cyan fluid acrylic. This is the second time I've used Primary Cyan and it is lovely to work with - it's SO transparent - perfect for glazing. Mix it with Quinacridone Magenta fluid acrylic and you get a fantastic range of transparent hues from blue to purple.

For purchase information, please see my website.

Celebration of Blue, 9035, metal and mixed media abstract

This metals and mixed media abstract features aluminum, pewter embossing metal, blue steel cut tacks, metal brads, acrylic modeling compound and acrylic metallic paints in an abstract composition. This is another painting for the upcoming Blue show at Third Floor Gallery in Parker, CO.
I really had fun with this one and, could it be, blue just might be my new favorite color. : - )

A Winter's Day II, 08408, snowy stream in winter

I've painted this little stream before from a different angle. I think it's all the shades of blue I use for the snow and water that makes is so fun for me. I used combinations of cobalt blue, prussian blue, and ultramarine blue. Also Paynes grey, which is really a shade of blue also.

This painting also has the palette color notes on the side.

Sea Walk, 05908

My daughter and her husband live in Cronulla, NSW, Australia. They sent me some lovely photos of the ocean taken on a morning stroll near their home.

This original oil painting is on 0.75 inch gallery wrap canvas with the sides painted. Framing is not necessary.

For purchase information, please see my website:

SURF 'N SAND, 04108, multipanel acrylic abstract

I'm not sure what I was trying to accomplish with this multi-panel piece. The acrylic paintings are mounted on natural color MDF boards, which are mounted on black MDF boards in a layered presentation. The paintings are on gatorfoam, a cool product in which the canvas is attached to very rigid foam core.

In the paintings, I was playfully letting the colors wash together after applying various acrylic mediums (clear tar gel and absorbent ground by Golden). The clear tar gel shows the color of the surface it was applied to - in this case white. Other white circles are made with a spritz of alcohol on the wet acrylic.

They are all 5.5 inches wide and various lengths from 8.5 to 13.5. These are the outside dimensions of the black panel.

For purchase information, please see my website:

Lapis and Gold, 24x24 acrylic geologic abstract

This painting has a lot of gold metal leaf and texture that makes it so interesting. I painted over the metal leaf in a lot of places so it's shininess is subdued. You have to be careful with metallics not to over do them, or they can overwhelm the painting.

Minnesota Winter, 18x30 oil (SOLD)

This is the scene in my brother's back yard in the middle of a Minnesota winter. I grew up in MN, so I love snow. Here in Colorado where I now live, we get snow, but it doesn't last as long as it does in Duluth, MN. Yesterday was one of those days I love with big flakes falling down. Today is sun and cobalt blue sky.
When I first started this blog, I opened with a picture of my house after a heavy snow.http://carolnelsonfineart.blogspot.com/2007/02/carol-nelson-blog_4487.html

Chinese Takeout 2, 5.5x14.5 oil

I loved painting these takeout containers in red (see earlier post), so thought I'd rearrange them and make them shades of blue. This painting is on masonite with a 1.75 inch wooden cradle - no frame necessary.

$225 includes shipping. To purchase with Paypal, please see my website (www.carolnelsonfineart.com) for Buy Now button.

Still Life Studies of My Stuff: Blue and Green Vases

Ocean Colored Vases
I realized that if I only paint my stuff, I will never get to paint anything in the cool end of the palette. So I picked up theses two vases at a thrift store. Their sparkling blue and green colors actually complement my terracotta kitchen very well.
They remind me of some beautiful ocean colors I've seen that are a very long way from Colorado.
