Still Life Fruit and Flowers Contemporary Painting "Fruit and Flowers" by Colorado Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson

After doing a lot of abstracts, my garden is my inspiration for this floral painting. I love the colors and the impasto texture of this oil painting.

"EGG ON RED" 11018, daily painter still life © Carol Nelson Fine Art

http://carolnelsonfineart.com/works/601273/egg-on-red-11018
"EGG ON RED"

This is my entry in the DPW challenge where we were to paint a white object on a colorful background.  Of course a white object will reflect the colors that are close to it.

Painting this egg reminded me of a drawing class I took as a freshman in college.  We each had to bring a hard boiled egg to class.  We spent three weeks drawing our eggs - first just the outline, then we added shading and shadows.

"WHAT A PAIR" 11014 daily painter still life pears © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"WHAT A PAIR"
The idea with this little painting was to put down a stroke of color and then leave it there.  You can see lots of brush strokes.  There is an honest freshness to paintings done in this style.  It is impossible to muddle colors because the paint for each stroke is mixed on the palette and THEN applied - no mixing on the painting itself.  That's where some painters get into trouble and end up creating mud when they start messing around with paint already on the canvas.

"THE FOUR PEPS" 11006 daily painter still life peppers © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"THE FOUR PEPS"

This is a demo I did for my acrylics class on Monday.  I think you can guess what color the under painting is.

Normally, I would probably paint a still life in oil.  I need the extra working time that oils have.  Since this is an acrylics class, I didn't think I should use oils.  LOL

I know you can use "retarders" to slow down the dry time for acrylics, but I have never tried them.  If something needs that much working time, I'll just use oils.

"FIVE OF A KIND," 10158, textured pear still life © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"FIVE OF A KIND"

This was a lesson I had everyone try in my acrylics class.  I asked if they had any unsuccessful watercolors at home.  Amazingly, they all did! LOL They were not going to try again to work on the failed painting, but rather USE the underlying colors as an under painting for something new.

They had to turn their original painting upside down and add texture with acrylic modeling paste.  When that was dry, they were to paint transparently and opaquely OVER the underlying image.

Next they were to use "corners" to locate an appealing abstract composition, OR use a paper pattern of something like leaves, pears, cups, fish, etc and add these images to the painting.

We called the original failed paintings "dogs."  Some of the dogs were transformed into successful paintings.  Others, went from being one kind of dog to another.  Great fun.

This is my "dog" - there is a landscape painting underneath that was quite dreadful.  I like the way this one turned out.  For purchase information on this 9x12 painting, please click here to go to my website.

"SPRING ETERNAL 2," 10131, daily painter textured floral still life © Carol Nelson Fine Art

No painting is safe hanging in the home of an artist! This large 24x48 painting has been hanging in my bedroom for two years. Actually, the third one down is the previous incarnation of this painting. You'll notice the original version had a dark brown, solid background - dramatic, but kind of depressing. For two years, I've looked at it wondering what was wrong. Today I took it off the wall and said to myself, I don't like it and I'm either going to totally ruin it or make it better.

It had a coating of Soluvar varnish on it which I had to remove with mineral spirits before I could begin revamping the painting. Almost everything I did to it was on the background areas. I can't believe how much more vibrant and colorful it looks now. Amazing, really.

"DAPHNE'S DAISIES," 10126, daily painter original floral still life © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Daisies are always cheerful looking flowers. Well I guess all flowers are cheerful, but their big, round centers make it seem like daisies are looking at you - and not in a creepy way.

I started this painting out on a panel painted brick red. I let it show through here and there. It always adds a little sparkle when you do that.

The pot was supposed to look like metal, but I think it looks more like pottery. Either way, I'm OK with it.

This 6x6 original oil painting on panel is available for $85, including shipping in the US/Canada. Click here to go to my website for purchase information.

THREE'S COMPANY, 9106, textured palette knife still life © Carol Nelson Fine Art

I am having fun with these palette knife paintings. The unique texture created by a knife is so pure - you are literally looking at a slice of pure pigment. This is not to say I don't mix the paints out of the tube - I do, but when I have mixed the desired color mixture, it is applied directly. The result is a passage without a lot of blending of colors into each other.
I took a lot of liberties with the colors in these pears. Pears come in a lot of colors although the turquoise may be a bit of an exaggeration.

Yellow Onions, 00909, onion still life

These onions are actually very attractive. I bought a bag on onions and considered painting them in the bag until I thought about the complexity of such a painting with the mesh of the bag on top of the layers of peel on the onions. I could do it, but I would have to charge $1000 for a little painting.

This painting is on a 6x6 gallery wrap canvas. For more info on this painting, please see my website:

Boston Vacuum Mount, 00809, pencil sharpener still life

This pencil sharpener is ancient. I can't even remember how it came to be in our family. I thought I would honor it's faithful service with a portrait. It can rest now because I bought an electric one.

Split Personality, 00509, pear still life

I am having a wonderful birthday day. I'm painting all day, then playing tennis tonight and going out to dinner with girl friends. My husband and I and some friends went out last night. He was so sweet to give up watching the AFC playoff game to go to dinner (although there was a little grumbling.)
This painting is a pear cut in half shortly before it was eaten. These pears are really delish.
Once again, I put it on a reflective surface.

Divergent Opinions, 00409, pear still life

I'm amusing myself with the titles of my pear paintings. These three seem to have their backs to one another after a heated argument. Three more members of my giant Costco bag of pears.
For purchase information, please see my website:

Lean on Me, 00309, pear still life

I haven't done any still lifes in a long while. I bought a bag of pears at Costco - so I have a TON of pears. I put them on a bronze charger plate so I could see their reflection. This is my second ever pear painting. I'm not sure what it is about pears that makes them so PAINTABLE.
Maybe it's that they seem to RELATE to one another.
I have a couple more pear paintings in the planning stage.
This original oil is on 5x7 gallery wrap canvas. For purchase information, please see my website:

CHINESE TAKE OUT 2, original still life oil painting

I posted this painting a year ago. It has been to a couple shows. People love it, but it has not found a home. If I had a blue kitchen, I would want this painting. I think it is so charming (if I do say so myself). This painting is 5.5 x 14.5 x 1.75inches, on a masonite cradled panel.

That is one of the mysteries of being an artist. Paintings I personally love sometimes do not sell, while some that I'm not crazy about, DO sell. Beauty, as they say, is definately in the eye of the beholder.

SUNFLOWERS 2, 02308, 6x6 oil painting of sunflower bouquet

A friend came over and saw this painting sitting on it's little easel and thought it was so attractive. I think that displaying these 6x6 paintings on their own miniature easel is a great way to show them. They attract more attention when used as a small decorative accent than when hanging on a wall.

Cherry Boat, 4x12 oil

I took this picture of cherries in a silver olive boat a couple months ago when the Bing cherries first hit the market. I like the way you can see the cherries reflected in the side of the boat. Cherries make a great subject because of the intense shiny color. Eating the subject is always an extra perk. Painted on gallery wrap (no frame necessary) 4x12 canvas. To purchase for $100 with Paypal, please see http://www.carolnelsonfineart.com/, click on "works", then "small paintings."

Pears on Pewter Platter, 8x10 oil, $100

I feel like I've finally given in to the siren call of pears. EVERY artist who does still lifes eventually paints pears. I've resisted yellow pears and green pears, but when I saw these red beauties at the market, I couldn't resist. What is it about pears anyway? Maybe it's their voluptuous feminine shape.

The other thing I wanted to try with this painting was starting with a black background. I must say that was really fun. The iceland poppies I just finished were also started on black.
