No painting is safe hanging in the home of an artist! This large 24x48 painting has been hanging in my bedroom for two years. Actually, the third one down is the previous incarnation of this painting. You'll notice the original version had a dark brown, solid background - dramatic, but kind of depressing. For two years, I've looked at it wondering what was wrong. Today I took it off the wall and said to myself, I don't like it and I'm either going to totally ruin it or make it better.
It had a coating of Soluvar varnish on it which I had to remove with mineral spirits before I could begin revamping the painting. Almost everything I did to it was on the background areas. I can't believe how much more vibrant and colorful it looks now. Amazing, really.

You are right about a painting not being safe at an artists place, but if we improve a work as you did, all is well.
Don't know what it looked like before, but I like it now... You have this bubbly effect in the background too, which I find appealing.
I was thinking before I read the post that you have such a wonderful vibrant sense of color!
wow...bright and nice painting with beautiful background
It looks alive! Beautiful work! Great colors and such bravery to rework a painting.
It's incredible what a little a change in the background can do. This piece now radiates. Beautiful
Absolutely beautiful, Carol! I love that top photo especially! That is the new version after reworking the dark brown background? So well done and so stand out!
Wow. What a difference. It was beautiful before but now it glows. I love the colors in the flowers too.
I hate to be a spoil sport, but I did like the brown background. But I must say, I do very much like the new and improved background as well. Change is good. Well done!
What a difference the new background makes. Love it revamped.
Wow Carol: this is SO much improved! It is acrylic I assume? I sometimes go back into my mixed media work, but you have given me a neat idea with what to do with an old oil painting I have -now I wonder how to get those effects with oil....
You're a brave woman making such a drastic change to this painting, Carol!
But it paid off! The brighter, warmer background makes this floral look so much more lovely!
Go you!
