SURF 'N SAND, 04108, multipanel acrylic abstract

I'm not sure what I was trying to accomplish with this multi-panel piece. The acrylic paintings are mounted on natural color MDF boards, which are mounted on black MDF boards in a layered presentation. The paintings are on gatorfoam, a cool product in which the canvas is attached to very rigid foam core.

In the paintings, I was playfully letting the colors wash together after applying various acrylic mediums (clear tar gel and absorbent ground by Golden). The clear tar gel shows the color of the surface it was applied to - in this case white. Other white circles are made with a spritz of alcohol on the wet acrylic.

They are all 5.5 inches wide and various lengths from 8.5 to 13.5. These are the outside dimensions of the black panel.

COPPER ILLUSION, 24x48 mixed media abstract

This abstract has a geological feel to it, as many of my abstracts do. I used acrylic modeling paste to build up the copper colored elements and create additional surface texture on the canvas.

The first photo shows the canvas with the modeling compound applied. I like to add color to the modeling compound so I can see it better against the white canvas. There is also a small concept sketch where I was working out the composition. It's surprising to me how much the finished painting looks like the sketch.

The copper areas have metal leaf applied. The copper leaf was then carefully treated with copper sulfate solution to create an authentic black patina on the metal. The rest of the painting was done with artist quality acrylic paint (Golden brand) on gallery wrap canvas.

Lapis and Gold, 24x24 acrylic geologic abstract

This painting has a lot of gold metal leaf and texture that makes it so interesting. I painted over the metal leaf in a lot of places so it's shininess is subdued. You have to be careful with metallics not to over do them, or they can overwhelm the painting.

Turquoise Vein, 4x10 acrylic abstract painting

A lot of this painting is done in metallic acrylic paints and that reflective, luminescent quality is difficult to capture in a photo. I used both copper and bronze metallic paints on the majority of this painting.

The turquoise mineral used in jewelry occurs naturally with copper deposits. I doubt a miner would every come across a scene such as this, but artistic license is mine, so that's the way I painted it! Many of my abstract paintings end up resembling geologic formations for some reason. Maybe I was a geologist in a previous life...
This painting is on masonite board and will be mounted on MDF board painted black (very dramatic). For purchase information, please see www.carolnelsonfineart.com, click on works, then small paintings.
