Gemstone 16

This is a demo from my recent workshop in Lacomb, LA.  It's the 16th in my Gemstone series.  I never tire of doing these it seems.

Gemstone 12B, abstract acrylic landscape by Carol Nelson

Gemstone 12B
This is another experiment with enlarging a 6x6 inch painting into a larger format, 12x12 inches in this case.  The canvas is very heavily textured, and I also experimented in using a Tombo water soluable pen for the black lines.

When I spray the lines with water, they spread out, giving a fuzzy look that I like.  I then have to go over the lines with an India ink pen to deepen the color.

Gemstone 12A
This is the original 6x6 version on which I based the other painting.  Both are available on my website.  Click here to go to my website.

Gemstone 13

This Gemstone Series painting has the full palette of jewel tones.  This one turned out to have a definite "landscape look."

This is the eleventh painting in my Gemstone Series.  I call them "effortless abstracts", because of the artist cannot over think it when creating one.

It's that random quality of the lines that adds to the appeal.  Of course, the vibrant transparent colors of my Golden fluid acrylic paints is a big part of it too.

THIS IS MY 900TH POST TO THIS BLOG. I started this blog  in 1997 to talk about what is going on in my art studio.  At first, I was just like the tree in the forest that nobody heard.

Now, thanks to you, dear reader, I have hundreds of people around the world that read my blog every week, many more who subscribe to get my posts in their inbox every day, and even more who read my posts on my Facebook page.

What an age we live in, where the internet makes this all possible!

I can only say THANK YOU for your encouragement and enthusiasm about my work.  Your comments are so delightful to receive.

I figure it will be sometime in 2013 that I hit the 1000 mark.
Hopefully, you'll still be enjoying what you see in this blog.  I will have to start planning something colossal for that post.

Gemstone 7

This is the latest in my Gemstone series.  I painted it as a demo for the recent workshop I did in Ouray, CO.

It is a gift for a collector of mine who did me a huge favor that I am not allowed to talk about until August 1st.  (Can't wait to tell you).  All I can say now is that it has something to do with the the painting you see below.

Shootings in Aurora, CO

Thanks to so many of you who inquired about the safety of me and my family.  Fortunately, none of us were at that theater, which is only 5 miles from my house, the other night.
Senseless tragedies such as this, makes us more aware of how precious is every day with our loved ones.

Gemstone 6

This painting is another in my popular Gemstone Series.  I will be teaching this technique at my workshop on Ouray County, Colorado, this coming weekend.

Yummy!  Devil's Food Cake Mix + 1 can of Coke Zero

That's it!  I used the sugar free cake mix sweetened with Splenda.
I saw this on Pinterest and had to try it.  Just pour a can of
Coke Zero (or your favorite flavor soda) into a cake mix, mix it up and bake as directed.
I even forgot to add the 2 Tbsp of flour I should have put in for the altitude here, so it probably would have gotten higher if I had done that.
I'm thinkin' you probably have 50 cal/piece, or something ridiculously low like that.

NOW YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO!!!

Gemstone 3 is the third in this vibrantly colored series.  Above, you see all three mini abstracts in this series framed as a set.

Turquoise Vein, 4x10 acrylic abstract painting

A lot of this painting is done in metallic acrylic paints and that reflective, luminescent quality is difficult to capture in a photo. I used both copper and bronze metallic paints on the majority of this painting.

The turquoise mineral used in jewelry occurs naturally with copper deposits. I doubt a miner would every come across a scene such as this, but artistic license is mine, so that's the way I painted it! Many of my abstract paintings end up resembling geologic formations for some reason. Maybe I was a geologist in a previous life...
This painting is on masonite board and will be mounted on MDF board painted black (very dramatic). For purchase information, please see www.carolnelsonfineart.com, click on works, then small paintings.
