Two new workshops posted on my website.

Hello artists!

I just got back from an exciting 4 day workshop at Wenmohs Ranch in Texas,

where I had a great time laughing, eating wonderful food, drinking wine, more laughing, and, oh yes, PAINTING with a great group of gals (and two guys).

The class was made up of experienced artists as well as students who were new to mixed media and acrylics.

Stupid me, I didn't have my camera to record their masterpieces, and had to take photos with my cell phone, which is less than ideal.

On the day we did mixed media trees, I got a few decent shots of their work:

If you're at a stage in your art career where you want to try something different, something that will get you excited about your art, or just have a great time pushing paint around and enjoying the camaraderie of other artists, consider these workshops.

Upcoming workshops, with two new ones:

    March 15,16   Littleton, CO

    March 27-29  Westminster, CO

    April 15-19   Raleigh, NC

May 6-7-9  Lacomb, LA (near New Orleans)

    Sept 2-5  Dillman's Resort, Wisconsin

  *  November 4-7  Dallas, TX

  *  Feb 17-20, 2014  Wenmohs Ranch, (near Austin, TX)

As you may know, I also offer private and semiprivate lessons in my studio in Colorado.  I currently have a student coming May 17-19, who would like to share the time with another student if possible.  Shoot me an email if you're interested in semiprivate lessons on those dates.

If you want more info on these workshops, please click here to go to my website.

I hope we meet at a workshop soon,

Carol

Weehawken Arts workshop - Ouray, CO

Heading towards Ouray, CO

The views were stunning in western Colorado around Ouray and Ridgway.  No wonder they call Ouray the "Switzerland of the US".

My class at Weehawken Arts jumped into the deep end of mixed media.  Many had never done a much work using acrylics and mixed media techniques. You would never know it from the beautiful work they produced.

My next workshop is in three weeks at Wrenn Boulton's studio on top of Squaw Mountain, where the views, as well as the hospitality,  are endless.

"SANDSTONE WALLS" 11076, mixed media geologic abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Sandstone Walls

This is another abstract painting that can be in a vertical or horizontal orientation.  It is heavily rough-textured except for the square area on the left, which is very smooth and shiny.  I like the contrast between the different textures.

Introduction to Acrylics - one day workshop in Aurora, Colorado

Hi Colorado residents!  My one day workshop in Aurora, CO, still has space available.  This class is an excellent introduction to the mysteries of acrylic mediums and textures.  No need to stand in the aisle of an art supply store looking dumbfounded at 37 kinds of acrylic mediums - after this class you'll know what they are and how to use them.

I will also show you INEXPENSIVE SUBSTITUTES you can buy for a fraction of the price of the art store products.  After this workshop, you will go home with a texture sampler for future reference and a completed mixed media abstract painting.

Call the Bicentennial Art Center at 303-344-1776 and reserve your spot in class #147799, Introduction to Acrylics.

Metals and Mixed Media workshop in Aurora, CO

Yesterday I was at a marketing seminar all day, so I thought I would post a photo of the group that attended my Metals and Mixed Media workshop in Aurora, CO last weekend. No, your eyes are not going bad.
I took this pic with my new 12 mp camera, but I forgot to change the settings on the camera and it was set for extreme closeup which I use for the portrait photos. Duh. Live and learn.

Metals and Mixed Media workshop - Arvada, CO

For two days we assembled our metals, foils, metal leaf, art papers, nails, brads, tyvek, and whatever else we could find on our textured panels. I might have overwhelmed them a bit with all the information on the first day, but by the second day they were pros. Well, maybe not pros yet, but they had a good understanding of the materials and the processes.

This delightful group of artists was eager to learn new techniques and produced some very attractive bozzettos. By the end of the workshop I was losing my voice, but I think everyone went home with several examples of artwork they had never done before. Good times.

My portrait project will resume shortly. I think the break for the workshop, where I worked in a totally different medium and style, was a good one for me. I'm ready to attack the 35 remaining portraits with renewed vigor. Stay tuned.

Metals and acrylics workshop

I gave my metals and acrylics workshop today to an enthusiastic, talented group. I covered supports, various metals and metal substitutes, methods of attatchment, use of Tyvek, composition, collage materials, texture, methods of presentation, and sources of art materials other than an art supply store, e.g. Home Depot, scrapbooking store, Michaels, etc.
We had a grand time and many participants came away with some very clever, attractive creations.
I hope to now have time to really kick in the painting - after all, I AM retired.
REVISION: I HATE it when I do this. I don't notice flaws in this piece until I saw it on my own blog!!!! DUH. I noticed that this abstract, which has a strong geometric element, was not EVEN.
The horizontal black stripe was going across at a slight angle, instead of 90 degrees like I intended. What to do? The glue had set, and I couldn't reposition anything without totally destroying it. Fool the eye was the only option - thus the angled lines in the upper section and on the metal section in the middle below the tacks. I also painted the sienna corrigated paper black so it blended the error. Now it works. Only a ruler reveals the error, and I'm not tellin'.

WORKSHOP - Acrylics and Metals

This is a reminder to sign up for my workshop on Feb. 28, 2009.
I will be presenting a workshop on working with metals in abstract painting. The workshop is sponsored by Blue Sun Productions, www.bluesunproductions.net.

Incorporating metals into abstract works makes a dramatic impact. I will discuss various metals, support surfaces, methods of attatchment, design and composition. Each class participant will work with a variety of metals and supports. Participants will bring their own acrylic paints and brushes, but all other materials will be supplied.

For information about this workshop, please see Blue Sun Productions' website and click on EVENTS.

Workshop on April 21,2007

I will be teaching a workshop on mini paintings (6x6 or 5x5) using acrylic mediums to texture the canvas. I have taught this workshop to people with very little painting experience with amazing results. For complete information, please see "Events" in my website, http://carolnelsonfineart.com
