Poppy Flower Art Painting "Orange Poppy" by Colorado Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson
This vibrant, textured poppy painting is finished with a crystal clear coating of epoxy resin.
The resin gives the painting a shiny look with great depth of color. The images here were taken before the resin was added to reduce glare in the camera.
It arrives ready to hang.

"POPPY" 11074, textured poppy © Carol Nelson Fine Art
"POPPY" |
This is another demo I did at my recent Poppy and Mixed Media workshop. As you can see, the petals are sculpted with a lot of acrylic medium, giving them a 3D look.

"POPPY PIZAZZ" 11073 textured red orange poppy flower © Carol Nelson Fine Art
"Poppy Pizazz" |
This is poppy essence. The petals are sculpted with acrylic medium and the flower seems to leap off the canvas. I've painted hundreds of poppies (I'm guessing), and I never tire of their beauty.
I'm giving a workshop on November 4-5, 2011 in Littleton, CO. One of the things I will cover is how to make these little gem poppy paintings. (Think gifts - your Mom/Sis/Daughter would love one.) See workshops on my website for more info.

"PATCHWORK" daily painter textured poppy floral © Carol Nelson Fine Art
It seems like some of my favorite paintings are slow to sell, and some that I don't think are my best work, fly out of here. I will never figure out the vagaries of the market.
I created this painting over a year ago and I really love it. It went to one outdoor show, and then to a gallery, where it just sat. I saw where it was hung in the gallery, and it was a primo spot.
Strong design, lots of different textures, vibrant colors, bits of shiny metal leaf - what's not to like? It's 36x24 inches, so I'm not GIVING it away. BLAME THE ECONOMY! That's always a good excuse.
One benefit of not selling this piece is that it goes beautifully in my house. At least I get to enjoy it now. For more information, please click here to go to my website.

"POPPY SKETCH 2," 10150 |
This is a second preliminary painting sketch for a much larger commission piece. This 8x8 acrylic on paper is matted to 12x12 outside dimensions.

SONG OF THE POPPIES, 9118, mixed media floral painting by Carol Nelson © Carol Nelson Fine Art

I had to really work and rework portions of this painting because of the multiple areas competing for attention. The poppies are the center of interest, but the grid pattern on the right was so bold, it drew the eye away from the poppies. I had to tone it down several times. The areas embedded with bits of sheet music have a transparent layer of gold metallic paint on them for emphasis and pizazz.
This 24x36 inch painting comes with a black floater frame. Please see my website for purchase information.
DON'T FORGET TO CHECK MY BLOG ON MONDAY, 12-21, FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF A BIG PROJECT IN WHICH EVERYONE CAN HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE.
BUTTERFLY POPPIES, 9107, textured palette knife poppies © Carol Nelson Fine Art

I don't know if there is any such thing as "butterfly poppies," but it seemed appropriate for this painting because as I was working on the petals I was reminded of butterfly wings. Once again, I continue on my palette knife binge. I just like the texture you get with a knife.
I originally had magenta, yellow and orange poppies, but it did not seem like the painting was pulling together with all the variety in the flower colors. Eventually they all ended up much closer to one another in hue. The black background showing through here and there has a unifying effect.
This painting took me quite a while to work out the color scheme, but I'm finally happy with the finished result.
For purchase information on this gallery wrapped 24x24 inch (61x61cm) painting, please see my website, or email me at carolnelsonfineart@comcast.net.
UP CLOSE, 9104, textured poppy close up painting © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This extreme closeup of a poppy is in the tradition of huge floral paintings for which Georgia O'Keefe was famous. I painted this on a cradled panel with the painting extending around to the edges. In spite of it's small size, (12 x 6 inches) it packs a lot of bang for the buck. If you have a spot that needs a little color, this will do the job.
For purchase information, please see my website, or email me at carolnelsonfineart@comcast.net.

POPPY

I don't usually show the frames around paintings, but this particular frame looked so good around this giclee print of my original painting, Poppy, that I had to post it.
This professionally done giclee print is a limited edition of 50. The print measures 11 x 14 and the outside dimensions of the rich, black wood frame measures 18 x 21.5 inches (45.7 x 54.6 cm). Printed on canvas, the giclee is is identical to the original oil painting and comes with a certificate of authenticity with my signature and the edition number.
Giclee with frame is $275, including shipping in the continental US. Please contact me at carolnelsonfineart@comcast.net and get an early start on your Christmas shopping.
Poppy Trio, 9064, original poppy floral triptych

Here's more of these little cube frame paintings. I can think of so many things that would look good in this format. Poppies have always been a favorite of mine. I made each one a slightly different shade - orange for the middle one, then one with more yellow, and one with more red - the black frames are smashing for all of them.
I guess I'm so taken with these cube frames is because I have always liked squares and cubes - they show up a lot in my abstract work. Scroll down and look at the previous post with the little cubed abstracts. They each have several tiny metal squares.
