Abstract Painting, Mixed Media "Garden Window" by Colorado Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson

This is another in my experiments in oil and cold wax. I lay out my palette colors and add the wax medium to each pile. These colors are layered on using an old credit card or palette knife. Some of the texture is a textured piece of paper that is then painted over with the oil/wax mixture. There's also a little gauze, central in the background. Also visible in the upper right quadrant is some text from a paperback book. Finishing texture on the brightly colored areas is oil paint applied with a palette knife. The sides are black and white checkerboard pattern that is painted black, then gently lifted revealing some of the pattern.

This is a mixed media oil and cold wax collage. Going back to my favorite warm, vibrant palette. It arrives ready to hang.

This mixed media collage painting is a diptych - painted on two canvases. The canvases measure 12 x 24 inches, and 20 x 24 inches. This painting can be hung as shown with the break going horizontally, or rotated a quarter turn to have the break going vertically. Framing not necessary. Abstract Art, Mixed Media Painting “CRYSTAL CREEK” by Colorado Artist Carol Nelson

You can see the heavy texture on this painting that gives it dimension and depth. I did not have an ocean theme in mind when I painted it because I’m more of a geologic-themed painter, but this one sure looks like a clear mountain stream flowing over rock forms, or perhaps an aerial view of tide pools and coast line. What I love about this particular piece, besides the texture, is the variety of hues and the rich glimpses of underlying layers of paint. These are much more evident when seeing the painting up close IN PERSON. The sides are painted dark brown. It can be hung without a frame, either vertical or horizontal.
