Ensemble, 03808, revised, 24x24 original oil

Sometimes I have to live with a painting for a while before I know what's wrong with it. Today's painting is a case in point. I originally posted this on May 4th of this year (you can scroll down and see the original version). I never got around to varnishing is because I knew, deep down, it might need revisings.
All I added was another flower in the middle, toned down the edges on the purple verticle stripes, and added some drips. The composition is stronger in this version and I'm ready to varnish it now.

ENSEMBLE, 24x24 oil, original floral still life

My goal in this painting was to have a lot of soft edges. I wanted to SUGGEST flowers, but not paint them individually. The vertical purple stripes were added toward the end in an attempt to give the painting more structure. My painter's eye was wandering around aimlessly, so the hard edged stripes gives the eye a place to pause and focus.

I painted the majority of this painting with a 1 inch cheapo bristle brush costing $0.65. Those cheap brushes are actually quite good at pushing paint around.

SPRING ETERNAL II, 03708, 24x48 red tulip painting

I TOLD you I love painting this red/purple combination. LOL. Actually, I've had enough of it for now. I enjoyed painting that little version of this bouquet so much (see earlier post from April 20th), that I decided to try it on a grand scale.

MORNING ON CLEAR CREEK, 02908, 16x20 oil painting of river in winter

Another painting of Clear Creek as it runs through Golden, CO. In the winter, the scene is one of quiet solitude. In the summer, on the other hand, the river is alive with tubers, kayackers, and folks enjoying the rushing water.

The reference photo I shot for this scene was taken in the afternoon, so I had to "imagine" what the scene would be like at dawn. As you can see, I simplified and rearranged some of the elements in the photo to get a good composition. That is one advantage that artists have over photographers. Artists can IMPROVE on Mother Nature!

SUNFLOWERS 2, 02308, 6x6 oil painting of sunflower bouquet

A friend came over and saw this painting sitting on it's little easel and thought it was so attractive. I think that displaying these 6x6 paintings on their own miniature easel is a great way to show them. They attract more attention when used as a small decorative accent than when hanging on a wall.

Face 5, oil portrait in fauvism style

Here's another portrait in the fauvism style. The model, in this case, is my daughter, Suzanne. I liked the naturalness of her pose as she was leaning back on the couch. I probably could have pushed the colors a little more. I think I read somewhere that portrait subjects should not have their teeth showing. I like the full smile in this one, so to heck with that rule.
