Mixed Media Assemblage, "Blue Spirit" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

Blue Spirit, assemblage by Carol Nelson

This is another in my Assemblage Series featuring mini wall sculptures created with found and recycled materials. The circular blue focal point is a metal washer that was painted using alcohol ink, then covered with epoxy resin. The other blue area is embossed aluminum foil painted with Golden Fluid Acrylics.

The wrinkled rusty looking paper is actually a WWII era waxed paper fragment used to wrap equipment parts for American troops in the field - remember, plastic had not yet been invented. It's awesome to wonder what the circumstances were surrounding this paper.

Mixed Media Metal Collage, "Copper and Rust" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Copper and Rust" mm collage by Carol Nelson
The unusual thing about this painting is the background color. At Home Depot, I came across a pint of "oops paint", meaning some customer did not like the color that was mixed, so it was heavily discounted.

This happened to be Ralph Lauren's Polished Patina series, color Scarlet Verona. It's the top coat, and is meant to go over a base coat. Well, I didn't know that, and just bought the top coat. It has a LOT of what I think is copper powder mixed in the paint, and looks especially good when painted on black paper I later found out.

On this painting, which is on a wood panel, it has a lot of subtle metallic sheen that the camera cannot pick up. The central squared off spiral is hammered copper wire.

"Industrial Chic" mixed media abstract painting © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Industrial Chic" 24x24 mixed media by Carol Nelson

This is one of my early attempts at mixed media.  I was shocked and delighted when it was included in the FAV 15% for the July Bold Brush Painting competition sponsored by Fine Art Studios Online.

This painting was purchased by the City of Aurora, CO for their permanent collection, but you can still have your own version.

I have added this image to my Canvas Minis collection where each
mini is only $20.  Click here for more information on Canvas Mini
reproductions.

"Copper Curls" 6x6 mixed media

This is a little mixed media piece I did to take to my Metals and Mixed Media class in a few weeks at Art Unraveled in Phoenix.  I will be teaching how to use metals in a mixed media painting.
