"Metalworks" 10x10 by Carol Nelson

I had to do this painting as an example for my Metals and Mixed Media class next week in Phoenix. It has aluminum wire pounded into a random design, and some metal washers, in the central goldish stripe. These were covered with aluminum foil pressed around each object, and then antiqued with Golden High Flow Sepia. I love that paint for antiquing.

The orange foil was embossed with a swirl design before painting with Golden Fluids: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold and Transparent Red Oxide.

 There is also some uncolored aluminum foil that was antiqued with Golden Fluid Carbon Black. The two fancy patterned papers were purchased at an art supply store.

"Golden Hour" faux batik painting by Carol Nelson

This painting is an example of my "faux batik" process in which the painting is covered with wax, then flooded with a darker color. The dark color seeps into the cracks in the wax and leaves a random pattern. It's a very interesting and unpredictable effect.

Geologic Abstract Giclee Prints

I'm getting ready to teach a class on Geologic Abstracts at Art of the Carolinas in a couple weeks. I've never taught this class before, so there were some challenges in getting ready for it. What do I do when my example paintings are sold, or too large to take on a plane?

Faux batik painting, "Golden Hour" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Golden Hour" faux batik painting by Carol Nelson

This painting is an example of my "faux batik" process in which the painting is covered with wax, then flooded with a darker color. The dark color seeps into the cracks in the wax and leaves a random pattern. It's a very interesting and unpredictable effect.

Here are some papers created with the same process. They make wonderful collage papers.

The process can be done on different papers, such as rice paper, deli paper, red rosin paper, butcher paper, etc. The lighter weight papers seem to work a little better. For Golden Hour, I used a rice paper with fine gold threads in it.

The shiny gold threads don't show well in photography, but they add sparkle to the painting.

I will be teaching a class in faux batik at Art of the Carolinas in Raleigh, NC, on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2015. There are still a few spots open.
