"Autumn Daze" impasto autumn landscape © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Autumn Daze

detail

I started out with drip trees.  After painting the background colors, take a fully loaded brush and press it against the edge of the vertically held canvas, letting the paint run down.

I used two colors of drip trees as you can see.

To achieve the impasto look, I mixed my Golden fluid acrylics with modeling compound to make colorful mixtures of medium.  The modeling compound makes the paint color slightly lighter because it is a white opaque medium.

I know it's early summer, but I'm already thinking about my September workshop at DILLMAN'S RESORT, in northern Wisconsin (click here to read about this workshop).  The midwest has color equal to New England in the fall.

Fall in Colorado

My husband and I spent a few days up in Breckenridge, CO, for our anniversary.  The aspens were a blaze of yellow and yellow-orange.  The sky was the bluest blue.  You can't find a more beautiful place to visit.

These photos were all taken from the deck of our condo.  The top one was about 9 in the morning, the lower two were at about 4 in the afternoon.  I wish we had had a dusting of snow on those above timberline peaks, but it's still a good shot.

South Platte, 08608, river runs through a canyon

Today's painting is of the South Platte River as it runs through Eleven Mile Canyon. This canyon is beautiful any time of year, but especially in the fall. This is a favorite fishing area in central Colorado. It has huge rock formations that are fun to scramble on.

Blue and Gold, 08308, fall foliage in Colorado

Another fall landscape you say? Yes, I can't get enough of a good thing. Is is any wonder I go through cadmium yellow paint faster than any other color? I use a lot of the complement, dioxazine purple, too.

Autumn Splendor, 07708, fall foliage in mountains

I never tire of painting the Colorado mountains, especially when they are decked out in their fall colors. This scene is southwest of Denver, near Kenosha Pass.
This painting is on a 12x12 gallery wrap canvas. Instead of just painting the sides black, I decided to include samples of the color palette I used in the painting. They're on right and left sides of the painting. I think it's an interesting side note to the painting.

Autumn Gold, 06208

My favorite season is fall. Colorado has perfect weather in the fall - sunny and not too hot. And, of course, the trees put on their annual color show.

Historic Breckenridge, 15x30 oil, peak 8 of ski mountain

Breckenridge, Colorado is one of our favorite places. It is a beautiful place to visit all year round. Of course, it is best known for it world class skiing in the winter. Fall is spectacular as the aspens turn golden. There are many of the original buildings, such as this one, from Breck's past as an early mining town scattered throughout the village. The huge variety of shops, restaurants, and galleries make this much more than a ski town.

Red Leaf Tree, 6x6 acrylic

The leaves on my Bradford pear trees this year turned redder than usual. Some years there's much more yellow and orange. They were beautiful. For purchase information, please see www.carolnelsonfineart.com, click on works, then small paintings.

Autumn Cathedral, 24x36 acrylic brilliant fall foliage

What I was trying to portray in this painting is the spiritual feeling one experiences when walking under a canopy of incredible fall colors. This is nature's greatest display, and it happens every year, and it's free!
The colors in this photo are slightly exaggerated. The blues are more subtle. I can't get my camera to capture all the colors in this painting accurately. The painting is much better than the photo.
This painting is on two 12x36 panels, each with a 1.75" wide wood frame. They are sold as a pair. For purchase information, please see my website, http://www.carolnelsonfineart.com/

Aspen Leaves 4, 10x10 oil painting of fall foliage

This is the last in my aspen leaves series. Sometimes aspen leaves have a lot of red in them. There is one stand of aspens in SW Colorado that is always red in the fall and is in a spectacular setting. See painting of them on my website, http://www.carolnelsonfineart.com/. The painting is under "landscapes" and is called Red Aspens.

Aspen Leaves 3, 10x10 original oil painting of aspen leaves, $100

This is what the aspens in my yard are like right not on Sept. 2nd. They are starting to turn a little bit around the edges.

Autumn Reflections, oil painting of autumn foliage on a river in Duluth, Minnesota

This painting was done a while ago, and it has become one of my best selling giclee reproductions. It's always a difficult thing to predict which painting will have broad appeal to art collectors. When I do a giclee reproduction run, the set up cost for the first one is quite expensive. I take the original painting to a professional fine art print store where it is digitally photographed, the image is tweaked to exactly match the original, and then printed on canvas. I have had giclee prints made of 9 of my paintings. Some have sold well, some not.
This painting is of the Cloquet River near Duluth, Minnesota. For giclee pricing, please see my website,
