One of the things students of oil painting are often told is to "loosen up," meaning don't over work the painting. Don't nit pick. Don't work and rework a passage. Use larger brushes. Paint shapes, not details.
This painting is done on a red toned panel. My goal was to minimize the number of brush strokes - not an easy task with a complex landscape.
Here we have three main color masses - the dark trees on the left, the yellow grouping in the middle, and the orange bushes on the right. Once those large blocks of color were in place, it was a matter of working smaller and and smaller to fill in the details of the rocks and water.

We are creeping up on my favorite time of year. Who doesn't love autumn with the warm sunshine, crisp air, and the glorious colors?
This painting is from a photo I took on a misty, cloudy day. It almost seems like the yellow aspen foliage is even brighter on cloudy days - maybe it's because there is more contrast with the darker trees.
Once again I started with a red oxide toned panel. I like letting that show here and there.

This is always a spectacular sight in the mountains when the autumn colors are still on the aspen trees and the first dusting of snow is on the ground. It means Old Man Winter is fast approaching.

AUTUMN BEAUTY 1, 9082, sunken relief of autumn leaves
Inspired by the leaves piling up in my yard, I tried this sunken relief of leaves embedded in various plaster-like mediums. This one was patching plaster. I pressed the leaves into a thick layer of plaster, and plastered over them, then carefully lifted out the leaves, which you can see were all on one stem. The imprint of the leaves results in a sunken relief.

AUTUMN CROSSING, 9080, botanical abstract with metals and fall colors
I could have called this painting The Kitchen Sink. I used lots of stuff in this collage including metal foils, burlap imprinting, embedded leaves, metallic paints and acrylic mediums. As usual, the metallic elements were not captured by the camera, so this painting has a lot more sparkle and pizazz in person.
The leaves are turning and falling around my house, so that was my inspiration. When I look up at all the trees in my yard with their millions of leaves, I see beauty and a LOT OF RAKING in my future.

Autumn Splendor, 07708, fall foliage in mountains
I never tire of painting the Colorado mountains, especially when they are decked out in their fall colors. This scene is southwest of Denver, near Kenosha Pass.
This painting is on a 12x12 gallery wrap canvas. Instead of just painting the sides black, I decided to include samples of the color palette I used in the painting. They're on right and left sides of the painting. I think it's an interesting side note to the painting.

My favorite season is fall. Colorado has perfect weather in the fall - sunny and not too hot. And, of course, the trees put on their annual color show.

Autumn Cathedral, 24x36 acrylic brilliant fall foliage
What I was trying to portray in this painting is the spiritual feeling one experiences when walking under a canopy of incredible fall colors. This is nature's greatest display, and it happens every year, and it's free!
The colors in this photo are slightly exaggerated. The blues are more subtle. I can't get my camera to capture all the colors in this painting accurately. The painting is much better than the photo.

This is the last in my aspen leaves series. Sometimes aspen leaves have a lot of red in them. Autumn Reflections, oil painting of autumn foliage on a river in Duluth, Minnesota
This painting was done a while ago, and it has become one of my best selling giclee reproductions. It's always a difficult thing to predict which painting will have broad appeal to art collectors. When I do a giclee reproduction run, the set up cost for the first one is quite expensive. I take the original painting to a professional fine art print store where it is digitally photographed, the image is tweaked to exactly match the original, and then printed on canvas. I have had giclee prints made of 9 of my paintings. Some have sold well, some not.This painting is of the Cloquet River near Duluth, Minnesota.
