"Winter Wardrobe"

I just realized that I never posted this demo painting from my recent workshop at Art of the Carolinas.  It's another from my tree series.  I never tire of the seemingly endless opportunities to use color in this format.

It's painted on a cradled wood panel - I think that has to be my favorite surface.  I like the firm feel under the brush.

Winter on Clear Creek 2, 11x14 oil

I often drive to Golden, CO, (Clear Creek runs through it) because my gallery, Spirits in the Wind, is there...NOT because the Coors Brewing plant is there! This is another view of Clear Creek from a photo I took last January. We have so much sunshine here in Colorado, that even in the winter, it's usually pleasant to be outside. This was one of those bright, crisp winter days.

This is a larger version of the painting I did earlier of Clear Creek in winter - see earlier post on 10/15. I simplified the background and eliminated the blue sky. I like this version better.

Winter in Colorado

This is a picture of my house and look at all that snow! This is one of the snowiest winters on record for Denver and the Front Range. I grew up in Minnesota, so I LOVE snow and cold weather in general, but, enough already. Usually, the sun comes out after a storm, and the snow melts in a few days. This year, I've got snowbanks along side the driveway that are 4 feet deep and have turned to concrete.
The up side of all this whiteness is that I've gotten some great reference photos for my winter paintings. So far I've painted one with water (Winter Reflections) and one with snow tracks and shadows (A Winter's Day). My only other snowy painting (Minnesota Winter) was from a photo my brother in Duluth took in his backyard.
