Mixed Media Collage Landscape Painting, "Harvest Moon" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Several different collage materials contribute to the extraordinary texture in this painting including copper, specialty collage papers, textured wallpaper, and Egyptian papyrus. The 20" x 60" size makes a strong statement over a bed or sofa.

Abstract Art, Mixed Media Painting “Cloud Kiss” by Colorado Artist Carol Nelson

I am wondering why this painting received so many "likes" on Facebook. The neutral palette? The various textures? The cruciform design pattern? The juxtaposition of hard and soft edges? The full range of values?

I knew it was a winner as soon as I finished it. All the commotion on my Facebook page affirms that.

Mixed Media Acrylic Abstract, "Creative Floating" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Creative Floating" , 24x18 inches, by Carol Nelson
This painting features a textured surface on which a limited palette of colors were floated and allowed to mingle in a random fashion.  The symbols in the lower left are actually the printed letters of the word CREATE.  They are cut up and arranged in an abstract design.

Inspiration for this painting came from a new palette I'm working with in my kitchen redesign.
These Golden colors are Van Dyke brown, black, white, Titan Buff fluid acrylic, and Sepia high flow acrylic.  Prior to adding paint, the surface was textured using Alex Flex flexible spackling from Home Depot.  The texture influences some of the paint flow in unexpected ways.

Mixed Media Geologic Abstract "Petroglyphs", © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Petroglyphs" , 24 x 18, by Carol Nelson

This mixed media piece is done in a neutral palette. The earthy brown tones warm up a generally cool gray, black and white palette. I started the painting by layering three kinds of paper on the canvas: brown packing paper, red rosin paper, and textured wallpaper.

Then I added some premixed stucco repair (found in the paint department at Home Depot). I was interested in how the three different papers and the texture medium would absorb the paint. Sometimes you are surprised how a single swish of paint can look so different depending on the absorption of the substrate. "Boulder Field", geologic abstract painting © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Both of these geologic abstracts feature the same color palette.  It is not natural for me to paint in these soft colors, so it is a good exercise to do so.  Boulder Field is a collage with many different papers, heavy. body and fluid acrylics on a canvas board.  Chalk Cliff is painted with fluid acrylics on watercolor paper, and mounted on a cradled wood panel.

"Intersection", 20x20", acrylic

This is another in my Geologic Abstract series.  I was going for concentrated color on a neutral background.  I think this painting is a good example of that.

Mixed Media Abstract Painting, "Indigo Mood" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Indigo Mood", 8x10, by Carol Nelson
This painting was started as a demo in a workshop I gave in Portland, OR, a few months ago.
As often happens, I don't have time to finish my demo when there are 20 students who need my help.  Today I found it under a pile of  papers, so I had time to contemplate it and finish.
