"IT TAKES A VILLAGE" 11033 - daily painter mixed media collage landscape © Carol Nelson Fine Art
More yupo experiments. The background is obviously yupo with gloss medium swirls. I was playing around with it using some water color paper painted in bright colors.
Viola! A little village appeared. For more information on this painting, click here to go to my website.

This is another painting resulting from my experiments with yupo paper. Here the background is resist of gloss medium on yupo. The gloss medium makes the fluid acrylic paint do funny things. I love the unpredictability of it.
The painting has a beige linen mat and wood frame with glass. Outside dimensions of the frame are 15x15 inches. For purchase information, click here to go to my website.

It's all about having fun, right? See all those squiggles in the background? If you click on the image you can see them better. Those are gloss medium poured on the yupo paper. I think I like the effect with gloss medium, which I poured right out of the bottle, better than clear tar gel, which I had to drizzle from a palette knife.
The "trees" are cut up from another piece of yupo. You can't paint stuff like this deliberately! Just spray the paint on and let it flow where it wants. You can see how the gel medium created little barriers to the flow here and there.
I wasn't thinking "I'm going to paint a whimsical forest" - but I saw it in the swirls of paint on the paper. That's the tricky part.
I have a really nice mat and frame for this piece. For purchase information, please click here to go to my website.

It's so fun to spray the colors, then go away for a while, and come back later to see what surprises await.

Stretch imitation spider webbing (a Halloween staple) across the paper and secure it with push pins. Spray intensely colored Robert Doak watercolors on it and let the colors flow together.
That's the fun part because you never know what you're going to get - like the box of chocolates in Forrest Gump's world.
Stare at the paper and move it all around for at least 20 minutes.
When something finally emerges from the painting, paint NEGATIVELY all around the subject with fluid acrylics!
Wondering what negative painting is? Start with a sheet of, say, green paper and paint everything that isn't a tree a different color.
It's rather like the old story of Michelangelo when asked how he sculpted the figure of David. He said he started with a block of marble and chipped away everything that wasn't David.

Here's some areas from the same sheet of yupo on which I experimented with clear tar gel and Robert Doak intense watercolors.
Hard to believe all of these were on the same sheet of yupo.

Using acrylics alters the process somewhat because when they dry, they tend to trap the webbing, making it hard to remove. The photo does not show the intricate color flows very well.
