"Circular Divisions" abstract geometric abstraction © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Circular Divisions

This triptych painting is a simple pattern of lines and circles.  It's really more of a color study than anything else.  The top section is cool palette which gets warmer towards the bottom of each canvas.

Heavy application of modeling compound prior to painting gives the mottled look because the modeling compound absorbs color differently than primed canvas.  I like the variation that occurs naturally.

AUTUMN CROSSING, 9080, botanical abstract with metals and fall colors

I could have called this painting The Kitchen Sink. I used lots of stuff in this collage including metal foils, burlap imprinting, embedded leaves, metallic paints and acrylic mediums. As usual, the metallic elements were not captured by the camera, so this painting has a lot more sparkle and pizazz in person.
The leaves are turning and falling around my house, so that was my inspiration. When I look up at all the trees in my yard with their millions of leaves, I see beauty and a LOT OF RAKING in my future.

ANCIENT DWELLINGS, 9078, geologic, acrylic, textured abstract

This painting evolved in a tortured fashion. Believe it or not, it started out blue and green. I had to work and rework large passages of this piece. As Picasso said, "I begin with one idea and then it becomes something else."
That's the fun/fascination/frustration of working in abstract style. It took a lot of hair-pulling before this image appeared. The very beginning of this piece was the area that looks like netting with fringes which I created using burlap to create a pattern in the acrylic flexible modeling paste.
I've been on a burlap kick lately because I like the less than perfect pattern of squares and rectangles it leaves in the modeling compound.
The colors are a no-brainer because these rich earth tones are my favorite. I love blues and greens also, but, when push comes to shove, the golds, oranges, and browns usually win out.

Painted Desert, 9042, abstract desert landscape

I'm back into my warm palette. These colors look so good in my house, I just may not be able to part with this one. Lots of texture and some metallic paints on this painting. I wasn't sure whether to file this under "landscapes" or "abstracts" on my website (it's under abstracts).
The side view shows it in a frame on my orange wall - looks really good there. I have some caramel/toast colored walls too that it looks great on.
That's what I do - drag paintings all around the house to see them on different colored walls. I was shocked to see how good the blue series paintings looked on my orange walls. They're complements so DUH, should have known that.
