"FIVE OF A KIND"

This was a lesson I had everyone try in my acrylics class.  I asked if they had any unsuccessful watercolors at home.  Amazingly, they all did! LOL They were not going to try again to work on the failed painting, but rather USE the underlying colors as an under painting for something new.

They had to turn their original painting upside down and add texture with acrylic modeling paste.  When that was dry, they were to paint transparently and opaquely OVER the underlying image.

Next they were to use "corners" to locate an appealing abstract composition, OR use a paper pattern of something like leaves, pears, cups, fish, etc and add these images to the painting.

We called the original failed paintings "dogs."  Some of the dogs were transformed into successful paintings.  Others, went from being one kind of dog to another.  Great fun.

This is my "dog" - there is a landscape painting underneath that was quite dreadful.  I like the way this one turned out.  For purchase information on this 9x12 painting, please click here to go to my website.

"PEAR PARADE," 10110, daily painter original © Carol Nelson Fine Art

I was up in the mountains again for a 3 day art show in Breckenridge, but now I'm back and ready to plunge into my daily painting routine.

This painting is on a 6x6 panel and features everybody's favorite fruit - at least it SEEMS like artists never tire of painting pears.

You can see the red underpainting showing through here and there. To purchase this 6x6 oil painting for $100 including shipping, click here.

THREE'S COMPANY, 9106, textured palette knife still life © Carol Nelson Fine Art

I am having fun with these palette knife paintings. The unique texture created by a knife is so pure - you are literally looking at a slice of pure pigment. This is not to say I don't mix the paints out of the tube - I do, but when I have mixed the desired color mixture, it is applied directly. The result is a passage without a lot of blending of colors into each other.
I took a lot of liberties with the colors in these pears. Pears come in a lot of colors although the turquoise may be a bit of an exaggeration.

Split Personality, 00509, pear still life

I am having a wonderful birthday day. I'm painting all day, then playing tennis tonight and going out to dinner with girl friends. My husband and I and some friends went out last night. He was so sweet to give up watching the AFC playoff game to go to dinner (although there was a little grumbling.)
This painting is a pear cut in half shortly before it was eaten. These pears are really delish.
Once again, I put it on a reflective surface.

Divergent Opinions, 00409, pear still life

I'm amusing myself with the titles of my pear paintings. These three seem to have their backs to one another after a heated argument. Three more members of my giant Costco bag of pears.

Lean on Me, 00309, pear still life

I haven't done any still lifes in a long while. I bought a bag of pears at Costco - so I have a TON of pears. I put them on a bronze charger plate so I could see their reflection. This is my second ever pear painting. I'm not sure what it is about pears that makes them so PAINTABLE.
Maybe it's that they seem to RELATE to one another.
I have a couple more pear paintings in the planning stage.
This original oil is on 5x7 gallery wrap canvas. For purchase information, please see my website:

Pears on Pewter Platter, 8x10 oil, $100

I feel like I've finally given in to the siren call of pears. EVERY artist who does still lifes eventually paints pears. I've resisted yellow pears and green pears, but when I saw these red beauties at the market, I couldn't resist. What is it about pears anyway? Maybe it's their voluptuous feminine shape.

The other thing I wanted to try with this painting was starting with a black background. I must say that was really fun. The iceland poppies I just finished were also started on black.
