Tapestry

with frame

I love how this painting turned out.  It has so many different materials in it - a virtual mixed media smorgasbord (copper, aluminum, pewter, crackle paste, stucco mix, etc.)

Want to know a little secret about this painting?  It's a redo.

I did the first version (above) in 2009.  My goal then was to incorporate a number of metals in an analogous color scheme abstract.  I guess it was so analogous that it was boring.  So I added more texture and beefed up the contrast - does that sound familiar?

"RADIANT"

When the light hits this painting, the aluminum substrate beneath the red areas has a radiant glow the is stunning.  I know the photo doesn't show that, so you'll just have to take my word on that.
It took me several days to complete this piece because of all the layers of texture and color. There wasn't even the usual "ugly duckling" stage with this painting. It just kept getting better and better as I added more layers of color. I'm very happy with the final result.

"ALL THAT GLITTERS" 11015, daily painter metals abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"ALL THAT GLITTERS"

This painting is a demo I did at my workshop in Littleton over the weekend.  It has glazed aluminum, copper tacks, hammered copper wire, and sea shell fragments and is covered with a crystal clear coating of epoxy resin.  The metals and the epoxy make it very difficult to photograph.

Mineshaft, mixed media abstract diptych

This is another in my geologic series and is my largest piece to date. It is painted on cradled birch panel and is quite heavy.

After tearing my hair out a couple times, I finally got this one to where I like it. Sometimes abstract work can be SO FRUSTRATING. I had some textured papers on here at first, then ended up ripping them off. This painting is done with acrylic modeling compound, acrylic and metallic paints, copper and aluminum.

I bought the metals at Home Depot, where they are sold as flashing. The copper tacks and square metal brads, I got at a scrapbooking store. I actually enjoy walking through hardware stores and thinking of artistic uses for various things I find there.

Mini Abstracts - Simple Elegance 3

My husband hates my abstracts. He likes to be able to "see something". I think abstracts appeal to people who like pleasing design/composition. They like the way the space is divided and are attracted to colors and textures in the piece. I also like to have a strong geometric element in most of my abstracts. When I see abstract paintings that are just swirls of color, I often wish there were a few straight lines, or squares, or rectangles somewhere. As they say....different strokes for different folks.

Mini Abstracts - Simple Elegance 2

Working with aluminum is problematic. I bought it at Home Depot where it is sold as flashing. It is very thin, so I can easily cut it with an ordinary scissors. They have heavier aluminum and tin that you need a tin snips for, but that would be too hard to work with in this context. The leather I bought at a craft store. It comes in every color and is beautiful to work with.

As with all my abstracts, I don't know what it will look like when I start out arranging the different materials - that's the fun of it!

Mini Abstracts - Simple Elegance 1

I have been absent from my postings for a couple weeks. I had (still have, but better) a sinus infection that wiped me out. Couldn't even paint. Total veg. Anyhow, the past couple days I could work on a few paintings for short periods before I had to collapse.

Continuing with my small size paintings, I wanted to try some an abstract theme. These paintings are 6x6 and use aluminum, leather, and acrylic paints.
