Leaf Series 1-3, © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Here's a shot of all three in the Leaf Series. I'm getting better at pouring epoxy. On the third one, I forgot to seal the leaves with gloss medium. If you have paper in your collage, you're supposed to seal it before pouring epoxy over paper. I found out why - bubbles. They kept appearing for over 2 hours. I had to keep popping them.
I finally went to bed at 1am, hoping there would be no more. In the morning, there was one more, but it is very tiny.

Leaf Series 2-10107 mixed media leaves © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This is one of three leaf paintings on a cradled panels. All three are approximately 18 x 6 inches. I used 300 lb watercolor paper for the leaves, then glued them to the painted panel. The whole thing was covered with a thick, crystal clear layer of epoxy which enhances and deepens the colors and creates such a beautiful effect.

Mixed Media Demo #3 © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This is a mixed media demo piece I did for a recent workshop. It has copper metal, copper tacks and brads, tyvek, and acrylic paints on a wood panel with a black frame. Sometimes, when I'm demonstrating the use of various materials such as metals and tyvek, and showing methods of attachment, I end up putting together a pleasing little abstract during the class.

I liked how this one turned out. It's very 3D, an aspect which doesn't show very well in the photo. For purchase information, please see my website.

Painting Snuggies

The outdoor show season for me, starts next weekend. That means I will be bringing paintings to display in my booth to several upcoming art festivals. Keeping the frames and paintings free from nicks and scratches is always a problem. I am hoping these felt bags I made in several different sizes will do the trick.

I cannot take credit for this idea - I saw another artist (Rodgers Naylor) at a show last summer who made felt bags for his framed work. He used a hot glue gun for the seams. Since most of my paintings are larger than his 16x20s and 11x14s, I used my sewing machine to stitch up the sides. I made them ample enough to accommodate a frame or gallery wrap canvas.

I am no seamstress. It's been so long since I used my sewing machine, I had to read directions on how to thread a bobbin, which I ended up doing 5 times. I used a zig zag stitch, so the seams are pretty sturdy.

I am a bag lady now, but don't ask me to stitch up some bags for you because I HATED every minute of it. If you want to do this, I would suggest you wait until you see a sale on felt at your local fabric store.

100 PORTRAITS - the book is here!!

The book looks gorgeous. It's a full 106 pages. Each portrait measures 5x5, taking up nearly a full page of the book and is close to the size of the original portrait.
All 100 portraits are represented in the order in which they were painted, starting with Suzanne (1/100) and ending with me (100/100). In the table of contents, each person is listed along with their home state and/or country.

If your portrait is one of the 100, your coffee table deserves this book! It also would make a great gift for friends and family. Let me know what you think.

New York Minute. 10106, textured metallic abstracts

This painting is a diptych with each panel measuring 40x12. There is a bold, textured grid section on each panel. The dramatic colors and dynamic composition reminded me of the energy and excitement that is found in New York City.
Thoughts of 9-11 did not guide me in the creation of this piece, but after it was completed, I can see how such memories could be brought to mind.
I had difficulty photographing this piece with all it's metallic passages. There are gray-blue areas in the lower sections that appear black in the photo.
For purchase information, please see my website.

Seven Poppies, 10105. textured floral acrylic © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This 24x24 acrylic has tons of acrylic medium used to add texture to the painting. I guess it's because I see the poppies coming up in my neighbor's yard that I'm returning to my favorite floral subject. If it looks like a stained glass window, that's because I used to have a stained glass business many years ago and I thought I would emphasize that effect.

Pond Series 15, 1074, aspen leaf acrylic collage © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This painting is a layering of painted paper aspen leaves on a free flowing acrylic background with metal leaf accents on canvas. Whew - got all that? Then I poured epoxy over the whole thing, curling the leaves a little so they are not lying flat on the canvas. The epoxy makes a thick crystal clear coating over the entire surface. I swear, anything you put the epoxy coating on looks really cool. I especially like to finish collage works that have lots of little pieces with epoxy because it seals all those loose edges.
I have done a number of paintings in the Pond Series, but this is the first one utilizing epoxy as a finishing technique. For purchase information, please see my website.

Last Light, 10104, textured, acrylic, geologic abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This 24x24 textured abstract is another painting inspired by the photos of my friend Sue Palmer, who, along with her partner John Moran, is touring the west in a motor home. Look for Sue's incredible photo postings on Facebook.
I had a terrible time photographing this painting because I accidentally varnished it before I took the photo. That means the surface is shiny and there's light reflections on the texture. Also, the sky across the top is painted with rose gold metallic which doesn't show well either.
For purchase information, please see my website.

Red Passage, 10103, mixed media geologic abstract

This 24x36 geologic abstract features areas of heavy texture and the sheen metal leaf. Trust me to say that the photographs sadly do not show these features at all.
My friend Sue Palmer, who is touring the west in a motorhome with her partner John, has been posting her fabulous photos of Canyonlands, Antelope Canyon, etc. on her Facebook page. Looking at her pictures of these incredible cliffs and rock formations is one of the inspirations for this painting.
For purchase information, please see my website. Note: The picture on my website is not blurry. When I enlarge a photo on my blog, it gets fuzzy.

The aspen trees near my house are all decked out in their new leaves. Each leaf is a perfect bright green circle with a little point on the bottom. The slightest air movement sends the whole tree into a quaking shimmer of new green.

The BEST of 100 Portraits : Ferd 89/100

Many of you commented on how hard it was to pick your favorite from the ten group winners. The voting finally narrowed down to a contest between Ferdinand and Jonathan. Ferd took the honors and bragging rights by ONE vote. I think it's a combination of the vibrant colors I used and his congenial expression that most people responded to. Congratulations to Ferd (and Kim who took the photo, no doubt.)

You have all been great sports in following my blog and voting. The book is done, but I'm not going to offer it for sale until I get my proof copy to make sure everything is OK. I think you're going to like it.

I now know what my next project is going to be, but you'll have to wait several months to find out what it is. With the summer outdoor show season about to start, I have to paint like mad for that. After all, I wouldn't want to pay $500 for a booth fee and have nothing to sell!!!

100 Portraits: the top ten

The winner of the last and final group of ten was MANDY! So now we have to pick the winner of winners - no small task. I wish I could line them all up horizontally, but I can't on this blog.
Just scroll down on the last two entries and let me know who will be the Grand Poobah!
Email your choice to carolnelsonfineart@comcast.net.

Thank you for your vote, your comments, your kind words, your support. It's been a blast.

Carol

New World, 10102, mixed media, geologic, abstract, © Carol Nelson Fine Art

New World, 10102, is a mixed media, textured abstract. It has metal leaf areas which (unfortunately) are totally lost in the photo. Like most of my abstract work, it is an abstracted geologic landscape. For purchase information, please see my website.

You can see what a chameleon I am. While I loved doing all the portraits, I am also incredibly drawn to abstract work. It is SO CREATIVE. There is no picture to follow. The colors and composition all come out of my head - I love that.

100 OIL PORTRAITS IN 100 DAYS - Carol, 100/100, Carol Nelson Fine Art

Day 100

This is it! 100 portraits finished! That picture of me was taken last November with me holding my camera at arm's length. In the portrait I somehow managed to take off about a decade. Who needs a face lift - I can just paint my way to youth and vitality. LOL

So now what? First, we need to finish the voting for 91-99. Don't vote for me - I don't want any sympathy votes. Please vote by Tues evening. On Wednesday, I will post the photos again of all the group winners and we can vote one last time to pick the Grand Poobah of the 100 portraits project. Imagine that bragging rights that person will have!!!!

I'm sure some of you who sent in photos are disappointed your photo didn't get in. I still have on file all the photos that were sent to me. If you still want me to paint a portrait at the regular rate of $100 plus $10 shipping, just drop me an email at carolnelsonfineart@comcast.net.

What did I learn from all this work? I feel my skill as a portrait painter improved. I think I have a "style." It's characterized by strong brushwork and imaginative color choices. Many of you who are artists are inspired to start a project of your own. I think that is great. I certainly didn't start out to be this great inspirational figure, but I'm humbled and appreciative that some of you think of me that way.

My other goal was to increase the traffic to my blog and website. Many of your signed up to be followers of my blog and to receive email updates via Feedblitz. Many also signed on my website to received my free newsletter. It's nice to think that my tiny voice in the wilderness of the internet is a little louder.

I ended up selling, or giving away to our kids, a total of 61 portraits. Many of the unsold portraits were sent in by other artists to help me get the project off the ground. Thank you for doing that. In this economy, in a slow time of the year for art sales (the first quarter is always a killer for me), I am happy with the sales I made, especially to folks in six foreign countries. The power of the internet is amazing.

And finally, and most importantly, I feel I have gotten to "know" many of you through your fantastic comments. I thank you for all the support and prayers sent our way when Morris had his kidney transplant. Your kind words of encouragement were so appreciated. I think Sherry (Autumn Leaves) looked at my blog early in the morning every single day and left 100 delightful comments. Sherry, you even found something positive to say about portraits that were a little "off."

So after this project is wrapped up, and the Grand Poobah chosen, I have several paintings that are waiting to make their debut. They are mostly abstracts done at my workshops and some that I'm trying to get ready for the outdoor show season which starts in less than 4 weeks.

Thanks to all of you for coming along on my fantastic journey.
Carol

100 OIL PORTRAITS IN 100 DAYS - Morris, 99/100, Carol Nelson Fine Art

Day 99

This is a face I know well. It's my husband, Morris, aka Big Teddy, aka Coffee Fairy. He was sitting at the breakfast table reading the paper and I noticed the sun was really good on his face. I ran and got my camera and was snapping away which annoyed him to no end. He also didn't like the fact that I was photographing him in his bathrobe. I said nobody will know - but now, you ALL know. Tee-hee.

He is also known as Big Teddy (to me) because he's big and furry. I think he might also BE the COFFEE FAIRY. First thing every morning, I get up and take the dogs for a walk. I tell the dogs in a loud voice, "Maybe the coffee fairy will show up while we're on our walk." More often than not, there is fresh coffee brewing when we get back. Morris is still in bed, but I have strong suspicions that HE is the coffee fairy.

OK, TIME TO VOTE for your favorite of portraits 91 (Renee) - 99 (Morris). Tomorrow I will post the last portrait which will be a self portrait. I do NOT want to include myself in the voting because I would probably win on sympathy votes. Send your vote to me at carolnelsonfineart@comcast.net.

After the winner of this last group is determined, I will post all 10 winners for a final vote to pick the Grand Poobah of the 100 Portraits. There will be no prize involved, but just think of the bragging rights that go with that title!! Woo-hoo.

100 OIL PORTRAITS IN 100 DAYS - Dorothy, 98/100, Carol Nelson Fine Art

Day 98

This is my neighbor, Dorothy. She wanted to submit a photo, but didn't have a good one, so one afternoon she came over for a photo shoot. I had her sitting in my backyard in the sun, but the light on all the photos was too harsh. This pic was taken just outside my front door where it was completely in the shade. The light on her left side was reflected light from the sunshine on the side of my house.
For purchase information, please see my website.

I am very near the end of this project. On Monday, I will post #99. I will then ask that you vote for the best of 91-99. #100 will be posted on Tuesday. I'm doing a self portrait for #100, but I don't want to be included in the voting - you might feel OBLIGATED to vote for me out of sympathy. LOL

After the voting is complete for the last group, I will post all ten winners to see if we can pick the best of the best. This will be difficult, but fun.

Next week I will also post a recap of the whole project - what I've learned, statistics, everything you might want (or might not want) to know. I've received emails from several artists who have been inspired by this project and are planning some sort of painting marathon of their own. I say GO FOR IT. Your skills in painting will definitely improve.

In a couple weeks I should have more information on a book I plan to publish with all 100 portraits. I will also have more information on prints you can order through my site on Fine Art America.
