Contemporary Abstract Painting, "REEF, 051417" by Colorado Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson

"Reef" 13.5x4.5 inches, by Carol Nelson

This painting is float mounted on an MDF backing board. Students always ask me what adhesive to use to glue the three layers (the painting, the spacer, and the backing board) together.

There are several brands of glue available in hardware stores.  In this case, I used StrongStik by DAP.  For extra security, I drilled two holes in the back (one about 1/3 down from the top, and one about 1/3 up from the bottom) and screwed in 3/4 inch screws.

It is a true mixed media piece, with such diverse components as rusted iron paint paper, clay medallions, prepared tyvek, hand-textured paper, and turquoise stones.

I found the turquoise stones strung together at a craft store in the jewelry section.  There are tiny holes from the stringing that do not show.  They look and feel like genuine turquoise stones, but, for all I know, they may be well done imitations.

Love this! Do you hand stretch your own canvas to get the unusual size? I can't find long narrow ones like that anywhere...
