Mixed media collage painting, "Billboard 8" by Colorado Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson

"Billboard 8", 32x24 mixed media collage by Carol Nelson

progress photo

This mixed media collage is a diptych of two canvases measuring 12x24 inches, and 20x24 inches. It may be hung with the break going horizontally (as shown) or vertically.

The painting utilizes my "sandwich technique" as demonstrated in my instructional video, New Approaches to Mixed Media Materials.

Although my work is usually filled with vibrant colors, sometimes I am inspired to create in a more neutral palette. Although there are small areas of metallic gold and copper, the predominant colors are Van Dyke brown, and shades of taupe, gray, buff, black and white.

In the progress photo, you see the two sandwich pieces laid on top of black construction paper to see how they would look against a dark background. I then toned the two canvases in gray and taupe, keeping the values very light.

I ended up painting the construction paper with Van Dyke brown, and using it in the background.  A little more shadowing and some drips, and I was done!
