This painting is another experiment using acrylic gel for texture. I'm not sure how successful it is using gel for a realistic painting. This horse would have been a lot easier to paint in oil. Be sure you click on the image for the close up view of the gel texture.
I like the way the color sinks into the patterns made by the gel. I deliberately let the color bleed into the background by spritzing it with water - I was using fluid acrylics.

ReplyDeleteI find the textured effect very interesting. The horse looks really nice. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteUnique and interesting and attractive, Carol!!
ReplyDeleteI think the gel texture gives it a more dramatic finish. This turned out beautifully, love how you allowed the colours to bleed.

ReplyDeleteI just discovered your work, fantastic,,,,do I understand that you put the texturizing jell on the top? or mix the pigment into the jell. I am a watercolorist looking to expand, any books you would recomment?

Gorgeous work. I work with oils and metals on canvas and was wondering if there is anyway to do this techique with watercolor?
ReplyDeleteYour work is amazing!!! Beautiful, clean color!
ReplyDeleteCarol, it appears that the horse not only has texture, but that you have created considerable dimension with the gel (was it paste or gel?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for perfecting your skills, you bring such a gift to the world! I plan to see you this summer in the mountains!
Hello Carol
ReplyDeleteWe have a lot of customers and friends who would like to know if you ever considered doing some workshops in Europe?
That would be awesome for us who cannot make it all the way to the US.
Thanks
Hi Carol, I am a Northern Ontario artistI really enjoyed viewing your pieces, they are all marvelous. Regarding the horse with a itch and using the gel; it works great, gives the horse a lot of spunk, charactor, makes it long almost alive. One can feel his frustration of an itch he can't quite reach. Been painting near 30 yrs now and lately I have enjoyed working with lots of texture with my watercolours and acrylics. Especially playing with yupo paper as well. thank you for sharing your wonderful gift. My website is ArtistMom.net should you have time to view it,would love to hear your honest thoughts and suggestions as I am always open to critique. Happy painting!
