detail

This painting is going back to my geologic abstract series. What looks like copper plates is actually moulded aluminum foil painted with metallic paint to look like weathered copper.

I secured the foil to the surface with YES glue, but then added copper nails to enhance to illusion of metal being nailed to the panel.

This was a fun piece to work on.  For more information, click here to go to my website.

"FOLLOW THE SUN" 11085, colorful, contemporary, daisy flowers © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Follow the Sun

I painted these daisies a couple years ago.  The painting has been hanging on my wall in my studio.  I kept looking at the original version, which had some blue in it.  I think it was the blue that was bugging me, so I took it out of the frame, and went to town on it.

My husband, who is my greatest critic, likes the original version better.  I like the new version.  Any thoughts?

Today's letter from Robert Genn, The Painter's Keys, addresses this very subject.  We talk to our paintings and they talk back.

"Firmament"

I wonder if you can guess how big this painting is.  To me, it looks big on the screen, but it is actually only 6x6 inches.

This is another example of finding art when you're not looking for it.  Remember the painting I did using a pair of socks for the color palette?

This painting happened on it's own - with a little help from me.  It's another of painting on a foam plate that I used as a palette.
I was not aware, as I used the plate, that a tiny abstract was forming right under my nose.

Before I tossed the used plate, I looked at it and thought, hmmmmm.
I added a few strips of copper foil (which did not photograph well) to give it a little mixed media pizazz.

It's mounted on a 6x6 hardboard panel.  Click here to go to my website for purchase information.

"CELEBRATION OF BLUE", mixed media modular blue abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Celebration of Blue

While I was looking through a stash of stored masterpieces, I came across this mixed media modular abstract.  This is one of my rare ventures into the cool side of the palette for all the Blue People  out there.  You know who you are.

You can see that there's lots of texture and metals in this piece.  For more information about this painting, click here to go to my website.

Earth Elements

It's very satisfying to address a painting that just wasn't quite up to par, rework it, and improve it.  I first painted this work in 2007.  It has languished in my storage area for years.

I stumbled across it the other day while I was looking for a different painting.  I always thought the composition was good on this one, but it used to have white, gray and black in the lower section.

I reworked mostly the color palette for the painting.  I brought in tones of red oxide, burnt umber, and dioxazine purple, black and white.  The result is an analogous color scheme that easily blends with a number of decor palettes.

"AUTUMN ELEGY" 11082, copper, aluminum, paper leaves © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Autumn Elegy

Copper, aluminum, and paper leaves make up this ode to autumn.  I rarely frame a painting under glass, but a shadow box treatment works well with this piece.
