"GOLDEN HOUR" 11080, textured forest tree landscape © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Golden Hour

This painting has very textured trees our of acrylic medium in the foreground.  The background has papers, cardboard, and burlap for texture.  I like the way in which there appears to be a distant light in the forest.

"THREE REDS" 11078, textured red poppy painting © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Three Reds
This was a demo I did for a class recently.  I was showing them how to sculpt the poppy petals using acrylic medium or Custom Patch.

The background was black and purple originally.  Then I painted over that with a warm gray color and spritzed it with alcohol resulting in those little circles where the darker background shows through.

Alcohol spritz on an acrylic painting is something I can't seem to demo enough.  For students that failed Alcohol 101, I can only say practice makes perfect.  Doing the perfect alcohol spritz is somewhat of an art form in itself.

Happy Thanksgiving

"Hen Pecked"
I've never done a painting of a turkey, so this mad looking rooster will have to do for this Thanksgiving post.  Click here to go to my website for more info on this painting.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I am thankful to be doing what I love.

I'm thankful when my paintings can bring joy to others.

I'm thankful for all the fabulous students I had the pleasure of instructing this past year.

I'm thankful for the very fun times we had in my classes and workshops - you even laugh at my jokes.

I'm thankful for all my visitors to my blog and website - the world is so small with the magic of the internet.

My art and my wonderful family makes me feel so fortunate to be living this creative life.

Thank you all.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Carol

"PARKVIEW 1" 11079 abstracted tree forms © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Parkview 1

I made this forest abstract out of stuff that was just sitting around on my big worktable.  We have combusted foil, burlap, a piece of Citrasolv treated Nat Geo, and strips from an old painting.

The background of the panel was painted with Daniel Smith's gold gesso and shows through in several places.  There is a slight fading of the photo on the left because of the light source (daylight outside).  If I increased the contrast to make the left side OK, the right side would be too dark (sigh).

This piece will be in the miniature show at AUM Gallery in Denver.

"TECHNICOLOR TREES" 11075, colorful fall aspen trees © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Technicolor Trees
This painting was done using a "faux batik" process using wax and fluid acrylic paints on imported rice paper.  The rice paper has an embedded silver thread that shows through here and there (not visible in photo.)

Empty Easel celebrates 6 years online

Our friends at Empty Easel have been featuring articles of interest to artists for six years.

An article I wrote about texture is revisited in "the best of empty easel".

Check it out here:

"CITY TWILIGHT" 10130, cityscape buildings at sunset, © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"City Twilight"
This is a view of Denver, Colorado, as the sun drops behind the mountains.  What appeals to me about this painting is the reflection of the golden-tinged buildings on the rail lines in the lower foreground.  Those golden few moments in any city are glorious.

"POPPY" 11074, textured poppy © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"POPPY"

This is another demo I did at my recent Poppy and Mixed Media workshop.  As you can see, the petals are sculpted with a lot of acrylic medium, giving them a 3D look.

Mixed Media Poppy Workshop

Here's the creative group that took my textured poppy workshop.  We started out by painting and sculpting a single poppy on a small canvas.

Then, after they practiced the technique of sculpting the petals using a palette knife and acrylic medium on small supports, they created a larger painting using the same technique for the flowers, and choosing from a large variety of mixed media for the background.

My demo painting featured my "sock palette" from a pair of socks I bought just because I liked the colors.

As you can see I was able to match the colors in the socks exactly - a fun challenge.  I used transparent red oxide, raw sienna, paynes gray, black, white, and a touch of dioxazine purple.
