Here we go again. Click on the title of this post to see the image of the painting on my website.
If I were at home, I could upload the image from my pc, but I'm in the mountains on vacation. "SQUARE DANCE" is a texture and tone study in shades of blue on a 6x6 inch panel.

"BEYOND BOUNDARIES" 11048 daily painter mixed media abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This highly textured abstract features some unusual materials such as plastic netting used to keep birds from eating your fruit, tea, spider webbing (the kind used for Halloween decorations), yupo paper, and tissue paper.

Club 47

Today is the start of friend and fellow artist Kimberly Conrad's quest to improve her life.  She will be 47 on Nov. 15 and has vowed to (1) lose 47 lbs by her birthday, and (2) paint 47 paintings that will sell for $47 each, with $4.70 of each sale going to support breast cancer research.
Kimberly has invited all who enjoy a challenge to join her in her effort to knock off some pounds and organize their life.
I told Kimberly, I would try to lose 4.7 pounds by then.  Actually, if I'm successful at losing that much, I may be inspired to go on to even greater losses.

MUD show at DAM

This is my grand daughter, Zetana, and I standing in an new exhibit at the Denver Art Museum.  The exhibit is called MUD and features all kinds of ceramics and pottery. This scene was so surreal because of the vibrating orange and blue tiles.

The floor Zetana is standing on is little hollow cylinders of glazed and unglazed pottery pieces.  I liked the clicking sound they made when you walked on them.

This was a huge installation of glass/ceramic works.  Must have taken forever to set this up.  Impressive for it's sheer size, but at the same time, looked like a pile of (dare I say it?) junk.

This was a elegant looking exhibit because of the lights.  The hanging things are all ceramic (I think.)

Here I am in the red fox exhibit.  I've seen this exhibit before and it is awesome.  There are several gray fox sculptures frolicking around in a restaurant setting where everything - walls, tables, chairs, dishes, etc. - is red.

"ROCKGLOW" 11047 daily painter mixed media geologic abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"ROCKGLOW"

There are a lot of layers on this painting because I just couldn't get it right.  You may ask how did I know it wasn't right since there was no reference photo?  There WAS a reference photo.

This lovely rock photo was sent to me from India by fellow artist and blogger, Israth.  I did some compositional changes, and changed the color, but you might recognize some of the rock forms.

I don't think my version is better, just different.  I might have to have another try at this one.  For more information, please click here to go to my website.

"ARRANGEMENT"

This mixed media abstract piece has texture and metal foils in a geometric two dimensional design.  The painting is mounted on a 0.5 inch thick back board that is painted to compliment the painting.  The entire piece is coated with epoxy resin.   This painting is sold, but I have others that are similar.

"SUNSET TREES"

I did this little 6x6 inch painting as part of a poster project.  My artist guild is making a poster of members' 6x6 paintings as a promotional tool for an upcoming art show the guild sponsors.

The only restriction was that each painting had to be done in tones of blue, orange, white and yellow.  I used phthalo blue, pyrrole orange, and yellow ochre (Golden fluid acrylics.)
It's always fun to do a painting with a restricted palette.

"TIDEPOOL" 11038 daily painter mixed media contemporary abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Tidepool"

This painting was a demo piece at a recent workshop.  I think it's obvious, even in a photo, how much texture the painting has.  The texture is a combination of stenciled modeling compound and prepared tyvek.
After the photo was taken, I added a thick layer of clear epoxy resin, enhancing the color richness and adding to the illusion that you are looking down through water.
This photo was taken in the sun after the epoxy layer was cured.

"CROSSROADS"
detail
I love the subtle color changes in this painting.  Each section of this grid design started out a different color, but analogous to the other colors.  Working my way around the color wheel, it goes from shades of violet to shades of orange.

It just occurred to me that I did those changes without ever using a true red, e.g. cadmium red.  My new fav color combo is Pyrrole Orange mixed with Alizarin Crimson Hue - what a deep rich color you get!  These are Golden fluid acrylics that I'm using.

There's some tyvek sneaking across the painting, but I painted it same as the background, so it only adds a textural element.

This large 36x36 painting will be at the Summer Art Market in Denver this weekend.  For more information, please click here to go to my website.

"WOODED WEAVE" 11044, daily painter mixed media abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"WOODED WEAVE"

This painting is on gallery wrap canvas.  It has multiple layers of collaged material including foils, textured papers, and cut up strips of old paintings (notice I didn't say "failed" paintings.)

In some of my workshops, when we're searching for the elusive "something" that will make a painting click, laying these random strips of color over the design will often add the needed random element that brings it all together.

"MONDRIAN - ZORN 3" 11040, daily painter mixed media abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Mondrian Zorn 3"

This is the third in the series of mini abstracts featuring the
Mondrian design and the Zorn palette.  Once again there is a slight distortion from the camera.

This one is different because instead of drawing the geometric lines, it is actually three different panels.  I really had fun doing this one.  Look at those little copper nails.

The swirls are acrylic medium that I used a texture tool on to make the lines.  For more information about this painting, click here to go to my website.

"MONDRIAN - ZORN 2" 11037, daily painter mixed media abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"MONDRIAN ZORN 2"
Similar to yesterday's painting, this one features the Zorn palette and the Mondrian design.  Textures on this one are tissue paper, newspaper, and cedar bedding.

This painting is a panel mounted on a backing board with a 1/4 inch spacer in between.  This gives the painting a floating appearance on the backing board.
