Heartland, 9052, 8x20 oil on panel

Karin Jurick is up to her tricks again on unsuspecting artists in her Different Strokes for Different Strokes blog challenge. This time we were to post our interpretation of this bucolic scene of the Pennsylvania countryside.
The trick is that the reference photo she posted for us was black and white. We had to come up with the colors ourselves. It's harder than you would think. As you can see, I cropped the image so that the center of interest (the farm) wasn't smack dab in the middle. I chose an 8x20 format to accentuate the panorama look.

Carol this is lovely. Wonderful color and depth. This is a lush farm that I would love to visit.
Thanks for commenting on my blog. I don't think you were nit-picky at all. Love your abstract work too.

Yes, I also like the colors you chose, and the sense of perspective both drawn and with colors.

Carol, I have intentionally not lingered on the DSFDF blog only because I did not want to be too influence by everyone else's choices. But since yours popped up on my blogger I had to take a closer look.
This is a wonderful interpretation of a difficult subject in that it was black and white, I almost get a sense that you have lived there...

Carol, you picked a great elongated size for this challenge, and the rows of fields bring you right into the scene.

Beautiful depth in this - love the patterning of the fields and how they recede into the distance. Nice work!

My favorite part is the foreground of furrowed rows that create a set of complementary-colored stripes-- really nice!

I think working with a black and white photo is part of the fun and will help produce quite a variety of paintings from all the participating artists.

I like your choice of color here, Carol.

Everything looks natural and bright.

Smart idea cropping down the image a bit too!
