SURF 'N SAND, 04108, multipanel acrylic abstract

I'm not sure what I was trying to accomplish with this multi-panel piece. The acrylic paintings are mounted on natural color MDF boards, which are mounted on black MDF boards in a layered presentation. The paintings are on gatorfoam, a cool product in which the canvas is attached to very rigid foam core.

In the paintings, I was playfully letting the colors wash together after applying various acrylic mediums (clear tar gel and absorbent ground by Golden). The clear tar gel shows the color of the surface it was applied to - in this case white. Other white circles are made with a spritz of alcohol on the wet acrylic.

They are all 5.5 inches wide and various lengths from 8.5 to 13.5. These are the outside dimensions of the black panel.

APPROACHING STORM, 04008, original acrylic abstracted landscape

About a year ago, I did a painting called Red Roof that featured a house at the top of the painting, but the lower two thirds of the painting was free form impasto slashes of paint.

http://carolnelsonfineart.blogspot.com/2007/05/red-roof-16x20-oil.html. I wanted to try doing another painting with a similar approach.

This time I wanted to try it in acrylic because I have a show coming up next weekend (http://www.downtowndenverartfestival.com/), and it would never be dry in time if I did it in oil. That's one advantage of acrylics over oils, which take forever to dry, especially if you lay the paint in thick impasto fashion.

I like how this one turned out. If you squint you eyes, you can see the similarity in composition between this painting and some of my abstracts. This painting is on 30x24 Signature gallery wrap canvas and requires no framing.

CHINESE TAKE OUT 2, original still life oil painting

I posted this painting a year ago. It has been to a couple shows. People love it, but it has not found a home. If I had a blue kitchen, I would want this painting. I think it is so charming (if I do say so myself). This painting is 5.5 x 14.5 x 1.75inches, on a masonite cradled panel.

That is one of the mysteries of being an artist. Paintings I personally love sometimes do not sell, while some that I'm not crazy about, DO sell. Beauty, as they say, is definately in the eye of the beholder.

SERENDIPITY, 03908, mixed media triptych

This triptych uses a varity of materials including leather pieces, copper tacks, metal leaf, and acrylic paints. The various reflective elements pick up the light making for a visually pleasing composition.
Each 5x5 piece is separately framed in a deep, black wood frame. The three pieces can be arranged in multiple patterns.

KATHERINE'S FLOWERS, original floral still life oil 5x7

I painted this a while ago, but just realized that it was never shown in my blog. The flowers were table decorations for a friend's wedding. I couldn't resist painting them.

ENSEMBLE, 24x24 oil, original floral still life

My goal in this painting was to have a lot of soft edges. I wanted to SUGGEST flowers, but not paint them individually. The vertical purple stripes were added toward the end in an attempt to give the painting more structure. My painter's eye was wandering around aimlessly, so the hard edged stripes gives the eye a place to pause and focus.

I painted the majority of this painting with a 1 inch cheapo bristle brush costing $0.65. Those cheap brushes are actually quite good at pushing paint around.

Work in progress

This is the start of the underpainting on this new horse piece. It's 30x40 size will make it an impressive painting when it's done - I hope.
