Abstraction Study 2, original acrylic abstract

I'm almost embarrassed to post these abstract studies because I'm not sure of my direction. I know I like texture and metallics. Getting the right composition and combination of colors is like pulling teeth. It's hard. Maybe with practice it will come easier. SOLD

Mother Lode, original acrylic abstract triptych

I was reading about Colorado's historic gold mines. The hardships endured by early miners were worth it if they were lucky enough to find the mother lode. This little triptych uses a variety of acrylic mediums including gold mica flake and micaeous iron oxide. I'm sorry the metalic aspects do not photograph well. To purchase, please see my website, www.carolnelsonfineart.com, click on works, then abstracts.
SOLD

For those of you who have been reading my blog for a while, you'll know that I sometimes take flight into the realm of abstract art. For me, it is SO DIFFERENT from my usual more realistic style. It is both liberating and demanding. As I've stated before, each abstract painting is like taking a journey with no map and no destination.....just winging it. I hope to soar for a while.

Maria, 12x16 original oil painting of Mexican girl

For a dollar, she struck this coquettish post, just like a pro. What a little sweetie, a dark-eyed beauty to be sure. Children in small Mexican villages often supplement their family's income by posing in their colorful outfits for tourists' cameras.

Poinsettias, 12x24 oil

Suddenly, it's time to think about Christmas. It kinda snuck up on me this year because Thanksgiving was so early. Also, the weather turned from warm fall to seriously cold and snowy overnight. I did this oil on canvas a couple years ago. One of the things I like about it is that it can be displayed either horizontally or vertically. For purchase information, please contact Spirits in the Wind Gallery, Golden, CO, 303-279-1192.

Titanic Demitasse Cup, 7x7 oil

This weekend we went to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science to see the Titanic Exhibition and the IMAX film, Ghosts of the Abyss. It was really awesome. Most of the small artifacts were in glass cases, but there was one gigantic piece of the actual hull. Interesting too, was the cost of the voyage in today's dollars: the most expensive suite, today, would cost $78,000, while the least costly steerage ticket would cost about $600.
The first class passengers were used to being treated like royalty. The furnishings were of the highest quality and their every wish was granted. In the gift shop, I couldn't resist this replica of a first class demitasse cup and saucer.

Red Fox Study, 5x7 oil, $75

One day last winter, my dogs were going nuts barking at the back patio door. I knew from the bark that it was more than just a squirrel. There, on top of the fence, was sitting a red fox. At first I thought it was a cat. Then he jumped off and I saw that beautiful tail. We live about a quarter mile from a large state park where there are deer and all manner of critters. We've had skunks, raccoons, rabbits, ducks, and now, foxes in our yard.

Chestnut Trio, day 2, 15x48 oil

This is the stage where it looks really ugly. About this time I'm wondering if I can pull this off. I have lots of failed paintings that got wiped off at this point. I knew I could paint the horses with no problem. It's incorporating them into the background that's the tricky part.

Chestnut Trio, day 1, 15x45 oil

I liked the way Chestnut Trio, 4x12, turned out so much, that I decided to do it larger. I will post my progress. Day 1, I got the horses pretty much done. As I was painting their feet, it occurred to me that horses look like ballet dancers in toe shoes.
